Jered Sprecher

Jered Sprecher concluded his residency with an exhibition at the Locker Plant in August 2013.

Jered Sprecher’s paintings are casual, but not heedless. His colorful, explosive works are shot through with shorthand gestures that challenge most rules of pictorial order. Sprecher’s subjects are drawn from a wide variety of sources: home videos, Google searches, and mathematical abstractions, to name a few. His paintings excite the child-like fascination with making a mark. By taking on disparate subjects and fusing them with multiple forms of abstraction, Sprecher’s work reverberates with the flurry of images, forms, and patterns we see every day. Through the long and experimental process of painting, he wants to slow our visual experience to a more considered pace.

Sprecher lives and works in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he also teaches as an associate professor of fine arts at the University of Tennessee. Jered was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (2009), was the artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (2007), and received a studio space from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program (2003).
