Artist in Residence Open Studio: Yevgeniya Baras: The Day is Long

The Chinati Foundation artist-in-residence, Yevgeniya Baras will host an open studio and exhibition, The Day is Long on July 5 and July 6, 2018. Join us from 6 – 8pm on Thursday evening and from 11am – 3pm on Friday at the Locker Plant on East Oak Street. On view will be work that Baras has made during her stay in Marfa in May and June. Everyone is invited.

Baras’s oil-on-canvas paintings are built up in layers and incorporate materials such as burlap, wool, tire rubber, fabric, stones, and wood. This intuitive, accretive approach imbues her works with a tactile, almost architectural quality. Patterns of biomorphic, runic, or pictogram-like shapes suggest a sense of private reverie—a cryptic symbology that the viewer is invited to decode.

Yevgeniya Baras graduated with a BA in Fine Arts and Psychology and a MS in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003. In 2007 she received a MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has participated in numerous group shows nationally and internationally since 2007 and had solo exhibitions in Berlin, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York. Baras is the recipient of grants and residencies from the Pollock Krasner Foundation (New York, NY), MacDowell Colony (Peterborough, NH), the Rema Hort Mann Foundation (New York, NY), and Yaddo (Saratoga Springs, NY).
