August 19, 2026 | Announcing major restoration of the Artillery Sheds

The Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati is thrilled to announce its plans to restore the Artillery Sheds: two former military buildings that artist Donald Judd (1928–1994) repurposed for the permanent installation of his 100 untitled works in mill aluminum (1982–1986).

Located on the grounds of the former Fort D.A. Russell, at the northeastern edge of the Chihuahuan Desert, the installation is one of the clearest realizations of Judd’s thinking about art, architecture, space, light, and permanence. The restoration will preserve these relationships while addressing the buildings’ urgent physical needs.

The Artillery Sheds and Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum will be closed during the multi-year restoration. The 39th annual Chinati Weekend, taking place October 9–11, 2026, marks one of the final occasions for viewing of the Artillery Sheds and Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum prior to construction.

Throughout the restoration, Chinati will continue to welcome visitors through guided tours and open viewing, as well as through special exhibitions, artist residencies, educational activities, and public programs.

The commencement of this long-term preservation effort advances Chinati’s Art as Intended campaign. Learn more about the restoration, support the campaign, or view the press release.
