Carl Andre and the Pound Era: Mapping Poetry onto the Visual Arts

Everyone is invited to a talk by Caitlin Murray on artist Carl Andre and his written work on July 27, 2013. The museum’s permanent exhibition of Andre’s poems (1958 – 1972) will be available for viewing from 7 ­ – 8:00 PM.

Murray’s talk will begin in the exhibition space at 8:00 PM.

Murray’s talk will address Chinati’s installation with emphasis on Andre’s relationship to Ezra Pound poetry. Inspired by Pound’s use of the Chinese ideogram in his Cantos, Andre wrote in 1962: “I think that the graphic possibilities of painting and poetry can be somehow combined in our age in somewhat the spirit, if not the style, of the Chinese ideogram.” Murray’s talk will reflect both on the visual qualities of Andre’s work and on his relationship to and reworking of the poetic genres.

Caitlin Murray is an archivist and writer living in Marfa, Texas, currently working on Carl Andre’s poems for her M.A. in Art History at the University of Texas at Austin.
