Chinati Presents: Sounds Modern

The Chinati Foundation invites the public to Neighbor Notes: Modern Chamber Music by Mexican Composers, a performance by Sounds Modern of Fort Worth, Texas on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 8:00 pm at the Crowley Theater in Marfa. The event is part of the museum’s ongoing Chinati Presents series and is free and open to the public. The performance will be followed by a public reception with the musicians at the theater.

Mexico’s popular music is widely appreciated in the U.S. However, the country’s lively contemporary classical music scene is relatively unknown here; classical performers and audiences are more familiar with music from across the oceans than across the border. For this performance, Sounds Modern will present a cross-section of trends in modern Mexican concert music. The program will include works by established master composer Mario Lavista, as well as new works from younger composers including Arturo Fuentes, José-Luis Hurtado, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, and Francisco Francisco Cortés-Álvarez.

Sounds Modern’s Neighbor Notes program was initially inspired by the recent exhibition “Mexico Inside Out” at the Fort Worth Modern, organized by curator Andrea Karnes, examining contemporary art of central Mexico and Mexico City from the 1990s to the present day. The performance in Marfa will feature violinist and composer Andrew May, flutist and Sounds Modern director Elizabeth McNutt, and pianist Shannon Wettstein. The performance is sponsored in part by a grant from the City of Marfa.

For those unable to attend the event in Marfa, the performance will be streamed on Chinati’s website, live from the Crowley Theater, beginning at 8:00 PM CDT.
