Chinati Weekend 2015: Artists in Residence Open Studio
Chinati Foundation artists in residence Matt Connors, Ricky Swallow and Lesley Vance will have an open studio on Friday, October 9, 2015, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at the Locker Plant in downtown Marfa. This is being held in conjunction with Made in Marfa and Chinati Weekend 2015. The studio will also be open to the public during Chinati Weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm.
Matt Connors was born in Chicago and lives and works in New York. His colorful geometric abstractions, which embrace process and accident, were featured last year in MoMA’s The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World. In his own words: “As my subject matter has turned from the outside world to a more internal and poetic realm, the work, in visually presenting its own process of becoming, has begun to take on these very concepts of scale, investigation, intention, and ambition as subjects in and of themselves, by creating a visual rendering of my own developing thoughts, processes, tools and doubts.”
A number of paintings Connors completed in Marfa will be included in his exhibition opening this month at Herald Street Gallery, London. Other exhibitions include Concentrations 54, Dallas Museum of Art, and New York Painting, Kunstmuseum Bonn. Connors received his BFA from Bennington College and MFA from Yale University.
Ricky Swallow was born in Australia and lives and works in Los Angeles, with painter Lesley Vance, who will also welcome visitors to her studio in the Locker Plant over the weekend. Swallow is primarily a sculptor working in a variety of materials. He makes wall reliefs or constructions – often bronze casts of modestly scaled, hand-made cardboard forms, some of which have the appearance of glazed porcelain or ceramic with the leftover uncanny subtleties of the model’s original material intact. A recent series currently on view at David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles have lengths of rope (actually cast bronze) looping around and through rectangular monochromatic forms. Other exhibitions include Made in LA, Hammer Museum (2014), and the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, (2014). Swallow studied drawing (BFA) at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.
Lesley Vance was born in Milwaukee and lives and works in Los Angeles. Her paintings have been featured in exhibitions at the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA (2013); FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2012); and Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick (2012). Group exhibitions include Conversations in and Around Abstract Paintings, LACMA, Los Angeles (2015); Painter Painter, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2013) and the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, NY.
Marfa Public Radio will broadcast an interview with the artists on Thursday, October 8 at 6:30 pm CST. Tune in at 93.5 FM or marfapublicradio.org.
