Chinati Weekend: Friday, October 7 – Sunday, October 9
Everyone is invited to Chinati Weekend 2016, Friday – Sunday, October 7 – 9. Highlighting the weekend is a celebration of Chinati’s 30th Anniversary and the opening of two special exhibitions of artworks by Donald Judd.
Chinati’s entire permanent collection as well as the special exhibitions will be open to the public, free of charge, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Judd Foundation spaces will also be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, free of charge. Related talks, sunrise viewing of works by Donald Judd and Robert Irwin, a citywide “Made in Marfa” event featuring local creative talent, and a music performance by Arto Lindsay are all free and open to the public as part of the celebration.
Artists, galleries, and businesses will host open studios, exhibition openings, mercantile events, and performances beginning at 5:00 pm on Friday evening. Maps and a schedule will be available on-line at the Chinati website; printed versions will be available at the museum front office and locations throughout Marfa.
In celebration of Chinati’s 30th Anniversary, the museum will exhibit works by founder Donald Judd, including a selection of his horizontal wall works (progressions), and the untitled, (U Channel) & the untitled, (V Channel). Judd’s horizontal wall works will be on view in the temporary exhibition space on Chinati’s main campus. The untitled, (U Channel) & the untitled, (V Channel), never before exhibited, will be on view at the Ice Plant in downtown Marfa. To celebrate the unveiling of these significant works, Chinati will host an opening party at the Ice Plant on Friday evening from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm concurrent with Made in Marfa.
Chinati artist in residence Tobias Pils will share his work during the Made in Marfa event, with an Open Studio at the Locker Plant from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday evening.
The Chinati Foundation will offer free admission to the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions on Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The permanent collection includes work by Carl Andre, Ingólfur Arnarrson, John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, Donald Judd, Robert Irwin, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, David Rabinowitch, and John Wesley.
On Saturday, October 8, the museum will host talks by Yasmil Raymond, Jeff Elrod, and Annie Ochmanek. The talks begin at 12:30 pm and are free of charge. Click here for a complete schedule of the talks.
On Saturday evening, a dinner to benefit Chinati will be held at the Arena. Dinner catered by Stellina featuring Texas sourced food and cocktails provided by Casa Dragones Blanco tequila will be served from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. The benefit event includes a private sunset viewing of the newly opened Robert Irwin work, untitled (dawn to dusk) from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm. Music by Primo Carrasco and David Beebe of Marfa. Tickets for the fundraiser are $500 per person ($400 for members and area residents) and seating is limited.

Music by Arto Lindsay will be performed on Saturday at 9:30 pm at the Saint George Hall. No reservations are required. This event is free and open to everyone.
br />An early morning viewing of Donald Judd’s 100 works in mill aluminum and 15 outdoor works in concrete and Robert Irwin’s untitled (dawn to dusk) will take place on Sunday morning from 8:00 am – 10:00 am.
On Saturday from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Judd Foundation will host an afternoon reception celebrating the launch of Donald Judd Writings, a new collection of Judd’s writings at La Mansana de Chinati/The Block. Remarks at 12:00 pm by Flavin Judd, Co-President of Judd Foundation and Co-Editor of the publication, followed by tacos in the courtyard courtesy of Tacombi. Open free of charge.
On Saturday and Sunday, La Mansana de Chinati/The Block, Donald Judd’s Marfa residence with permanent installations of his work dating from 1962–1978, will be open free of charge from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. On Saturday only, Judd’s Architecture Office and Ranch Office will also be open free of charge.
