Jaya Howey

Jaya Howey was Chinati’s artist in residence in July and August 2017. Howey’s paintings, fabrics, furniture, and ceramic picture frames thematize a struggle to rationalize the relationship between individuality and collectivity, criticality and complicity, artist and artworld, painter and painting, educator and academic institution.

Jaya Howey was born in 1973 and lives in Brooklyn, NY. Howey has had solo shows at Bureau (New York), Standard (Oslo), Armada (Milan), Taxter & Spengemann (New York), and Marginal Utility (Philadelphia). Howey’s work has been included in exhibitions at The Kitchen (New York), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), Staatliche Kunstsammlungen (Dresden), and Team Gallery (New York). Howey received an MFA from Columbia University in 2006 and a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1999.
