John Newman

John Newman, Chinati artist in residence from March through May 2015, held an open studio at the Locker Plant in May.

Newman makes art objects that are unlike any other—complex in material and form yet modest in scale, these highly colored and intricate sculptures are assembled out of a mash-up of handmade parts that celebrate process, experiment, and Newman’s idiosyncratic way of observing the world.

John Newman was born in New York and received his BA from Oberlin College in 1973 and his MFA from Yale in 1975. He has shown his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York, across the US, and internationally since the late 1970s. He lives and works in New York.
