Community Day 2015

Chinati’s annual Community Day celebration takes place Sunday, April 19, 2015. This year’s event features an exhibition of screen printed poems by area high school students and a public reading of their work in the Arena. The program also includes self-guided viewing of installations, a talk on Larry Bell’s special exhibition, and a community reception with burgers by Marfa Shorthorn Boosters in the Arena courtyard. All events are free and open to the public.

The Chinati campus will be open from 1 – 4:00 pm, free of charge, with viewing of select exhibitions from the permanent collection. Judd Foundation’s La Mansana “The Block” will also be open from 1 – 4:00 pm.

Chinati’s special exhibition, Larry Bell’s 6×6 an improvisation, will be on view from 1 – 4:00 pm, with a gallery talk by associate director Rob Weiner at 2:30 pm. The exhibition of Bell’s large, freestanding glass sculptures utilizes 32 same-sized glass panels to form 16 same-shaped standing units and includes a combination of clear, dark gray, and partially coated glass panels.

Seeing Poetry, an exhibition of original poetry written and screen printed by area students from Marfa and Fort Davis will open to the public at 4:00 pm in the Arena, with a reading by participating students at 4:30 pm. The reading will be followed by a reception from 5:30 – 7:00 pm in the courtyard. Chinati is partnering with Marfa Shorthorn Boosters, who will grill burgers for the reception to raise funds for Marfa ISD.
