Community Day 2013

The Chinati Foundation and Judd Foundation warmly invite everyone to their annual Community Day celebration on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Festivities will take place throughout the day, from 1 – 7:00 PM. All events are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

Judd Foundation spaces, including La Mansana de Chinati/The Block, and the Cobb House and Whyte Building, will be open for visitors to walk through at their own pace from 1 – 5:00 PM. Entrance to The Block is located on West El Paso Avenue. The Cobb House and Whyte buildings are located on West Oak Street.

Selections from Chinati’s permanent collection will also be open from 1 – 5:00 PM and include the John Chamberlain building (located in downtown Marfa,) as well as the following works, all located on the former Ft. DA Russell grounds: Dan Flavin’s Untitled (Marfa Project), Donald Judd’s 100 works in mill aluminum and 15 works in concrete, Richard Long’s Sea Lava Circle, the recently restored Monument to the Last Horse by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje von Bruggen, and Elliptical Plane in 3 Masses and 4 Scales by David Rabinowitch.

Chinati’s 2012-13 special exhibition, featuring plywood works by Donald Judd, prints by Barnett Newman, and Chinati Thirteener by Carl Andre will also be on view. Rob Weiner, Chinati’s associate director, will give a talk about the work at 3:00 PM in the special exhibition space.

Print, Wash, Repeat, a group exhibition of silkscreen prints by eighteen Marfa High School art students, will also open in the Arena on Community Day. The prints were created during a studio workshop presented by Chinati’s education and outreach program as part of the senior high art curriculum. Students worked with the museum’s education staff and interns in the Chinati ArtLab over several days during the month of April to create the prints. The show will be on view through Sunday, May 12, 2013.

A barbeque dinner for the community will be served in the Arena, at Chinati, from 5-7:00 PM, with live entertainment by Mariachi Alegre, of El Paso, TX.
