November 1, 2026 | Día de los Muertos: Community Altar at Chinati
Sunday, November 1, 9 a.m.–noon
Free and open to all
Join us in building a community altar to celebrate Día de los Muertos at the Chinati Foundation. Stop by on Sunday, November 1, to contribute an image of your passed loved ones. Bring a photo; we’ll help you scan a copy, frame it, and place it at the altar. Other altar elements will be provided—join us to decorate.
Día de los Muertos is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2. During the multi-day festivities, family and friends gather to pay respects to passed loved ones. The festival is widely observed in Mexico and among people of Mexican heritage in other parts of the world.
The altar will be built around the freestanding adobe structure on Hill Street, just north of Chinati’s entrance at 1 Cavalry Row. Stop at the Chinati Visitor Center for additional directions.
