Flamenco returns to far West Texas June 20 – 24
The Chinati Foundation is pleased to host the return of Entreflamenco, the international dance company headed by Antonio Granjero and Estefenia Ramirez, for a weeklong residency in Marfa beginning Monday, June 20th. During their stay, Entreflamenco will lead four days of youth dance and percussion classes in partnership with MISD’s Summer Shake-Up, offer an evening adult workshop, present a public demonstration at the USO, and stage an original, full-length production of traditional Spanish flamenco music and dance at the Crowley Theater. All events are free and open to the public.
An informal public demonstration on Spanish flamenco art and culture takes place at the USO building on Friday, June 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm. Entreflamenco artists will perform a series of dances, with each piece introduced and narrated by the company’s artistic directors. The program will highlight flamenco’s particular origins in the Andalusia region of southern Spain, the unique combination of singing, dance, guitar, and rhythmic punctuation that define the art form, and the wide range of the flamenco tradition. Student dancers from Camp Summer Shake-Up and the adult workshop are included in this fun, community-driven event.
The program culminates Saturday evening, June 25, with an original production. This new work features principle dancers Granjero and Ramirez, along with their full company of dancers and musicians. The production showcases the rich, passionate styles of traditional Spanish flamenco song and dance with a program of quartets, trios, duets, and solo interpretations. The performance includes a live musical score, original costumes and set design, and choreography by Granjero. Doors will open at 6:30 pm for the performance which begins at 7:00 pm. Reservations are not required.
Entreflamenco was founded by Antonio Granjero in 1998. Based originally in Madrid, Spain, the company has performed throughout South and Central America and the United States. The company is currently based in Santa Fe, New Mexico under the co-direction of Granjero and Estefania Ramirez. In 2010, Ramirez founded Spanish DanzArt Society, a non-profit organization with the mission to preserve, disseminate, and create awareness of diverse artistic Spanish traditions through visual and performing arts. The organization offers classes for adults and children in Santa Fe.
