Ken Price: Sculptures and Drawings 1994–2004
From October 2004 through May 2005, Chinati exhibited sculptures and drawings by Ken Price created over a period of ten years. With consummate craftsmanship and a brilliant sense of color, Price has been making ceramic sculptures since the early 1960s. His handmade forms have continued to evolve over the years, resulting in a body of work that stands as some of the most unique sculpture of our time. Price’s recent fired and painted clay pieces bulge, ripple, and drip into colorful, voluptuous forms suffused with seductive wit and a myriad of visual associations. The sculptures are painted with many layers of multicolored acrylic paint, which is then sanded down to reveal a constellation of unexpected hues and patterns that meld the works’ form and surface into one organic whole—color appears to emanate from the inside out. In addition to 23 sculptures, Chinati also exhibited 40 of Price’s drawings, which depict melancholy L.A. interiors and cityscapes, land and seascapes, industrial scenes, as well as poignant erotica.

Price was born in California in 1935 and died in Taos, New Mexico in 2012. Ken Price Sculpture: A Retrospective opened at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in fall 2012 and traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the summer of 2013.
