Free Summer Art Classes at Chinati, in Collaboration with Marfa ISD
Area students can look forward to plenty of opportunities for fun once school is out at this year’s Camp Summer Shake-Up, offered by Marfa ISD with Chinati and other community partner organizations June 3 through July 9. The summer camp is free with breakfast, lunch, and transportation provided. All students are invited to participate!
Camp will begin each day at the MISD cafeteria at 8:35 am with free breakfast provided. School buses will transport students to their chosen activities for the morning, returning them to the school for lunch around 12:00 noon.
Registration is through Marfa ISD and the deadline to sign up is Friday, May 15. Information, camp schedule, and sign-up forms were distributed to students at both the public school and Marfa International School following a camp showcase at Marfa Elementary and Hibbitts Gymnasium on Wednesday, May 6. Parents or guardians should complete one registration form for each child and return it to Marfa ISD.
There are lots of activities for students to choose from, including Ballroom Marfa’s popular DJ Camp for grades 8 -12 and classes in computer programming and product design with HatchMarfa. Campers attending the Chinati events can spend a week making puppets, learn flamenco dancing and percussion, or attend an outdoor adventure week ending with a trip to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Marfa Contemporary will host a large-scale painting project with young artists designing their own mural on the gallery walls. Students can participate in Marfa Live Arts’ third annual theater camp staged at the high school auditorium and Crowley Theater, read all about their favorite superheroes at Marfa Public Library’s “Super Hero Summer,” or make Native American crafts with Marfa Studio of the Arts at El Cosmico.
