November 7 and 8, 2026 | Landscape tours
In 1986, Donald Judd founded the Chinati Foundation as a site where art, architecture, and land come together to create a coherent context. These nature walks, led by Chinati Land Fellow Ethyn Maki, invite visitors to understand an essential element of that context.
Walks will take place in sunshine or light rain; more extreme weather may result in cancellation. A water bottle, long pants, and sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.
Campus Loop
Saturday, November 7, 1:30 p.m.
$10 adult, free for children 17 and under
This walk offers a broad view of the land rooted in its history as a military site, and Judd’s interventions from the 1970s forward. It invites visitors to safely explore the lesser-seen parts of Chinati’s expansive 340-acre property, highlighting its unique landscape features and ecology and how they connect to Judd’s vision. Participants should be comfortable walking two miles over two hours.
Cottonwood Loop
Sunday, November 8, 11 a.m.
$10 adult, free for children 17 and under
This 1.5-mile walk explores Judd’s first landscape project: planting 22 cottonwood trees along the property’s western edge, and their relationship to his 15 untitled works in concrete (1980–1984). Topics discussed include the manufacturing of the concrete pieces, the site’s history, and current conservation concerns. Participants should be comfortable walking 1.5 miles in about an hour.
