Description

This issue features art historian Jana La Brasca’s essay on Fred Sandback: Sculpture, which considers how reinstalling works Sandback made for Chinati in 2001 renews their relationship to the space and to the viewer. Sandback’s 1975 notes and statement accompany her essay. Writing in connection with Oscar Hagerman: Sillas de México, architect Juan Manuel Casillas Pintor draws on his experience as Hagerman’s student to describe an approach to architecture shaped by dialogue, shared knowledge, and the lives of those who inhabit it. José Esparza Chong Cuy, executive director and chief curator of Storefront for Art and Architecture, reflects on Zoe Leonard’s Al río / To the River, considering how her photographs reveal the tensions between the river’s ecological and social life and the political boundary imposed upon it.

The issue also includes a study of Alvar Aalto and Donald Judd by Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen, professor at the Yale School of Architecture; an account of the Artillery Sheds restoration by Stephen Martin, Chinati’s director of preservation and planning; and reports on our artist-in-residence, education, and public programs.
