Process of Making

Now that you’ve looked, listened and explored, what will you make? Sometimes we make things that seem to come out of nowhere. Other times, we struggle to simply make the first mark. Both of these cases are part of the art-making process and both are equally valuable. It is through this process we begin to hone our personal style, point of view, and approach to making art.

Like everything, art takes time, practice and patience for growth. Let’s get making!

Return, reflect, remake

Artists often return to the same idea over and over again, working off of one original artwork for years, developing different iterations, and expanding the original thought into new territories. An artist may begin with a sketch, that they turn into a sculpture, and then perhaps a performance, and then photography and video footage. Responding to your own art through making the piece again in a different medium, on a different scale, or even in a different artistic language, can help you understand and realize the piece on a deeper level. Donald Judd is an excellent example of an artist who explored the same ideas in a variety of mediums, sizes, and installations. Each iteration of Judd's boxes, for example, from the concrete, to the mill aluminum, to the plywood, introduces a unique investigation of space, materiality, and structure, all while maintaining the same foundational shape of a box. Today we encourage you to take joy in your own amazing art and remake a piece in a new material. If you made a manifesto with us, try to incorporate some of the principles you set for yourself in your piece! Lastly, we encourage you to take care in exhibiting your new series (a series is a set of artworks that are meant to go together, often exploring the same theme, material, or idea). Regresa, reflexiona, re-crea
