Making art can be a solitary endeavor, but it can also be a collaboration between artists and friends. What do we learn from our friends when we work with them? What new skills or perspectives can we gain by making together?

Friendship celebrates kindness, joy, and communication. This series expands upon our ideas of what art can be, by including making a poster, texting a friend photographs, and sending a postcard!

Though we haven't all met in person, us educators at Chinati consider all of you our friends! To show our appreciation for your support of our programming, this week we are focusing on friendship. Though making art can be a solitary activity, creating with a friend can teach us new skills and new ways of thinking and perceiving. For today's prompt, Director of Education, Michael Roch, created a squiggle on his phone. Scroll through the deck to the third image to locate the doodle. What does it look like to you? During challenging times such as these, friends and family of all kinds help to make the days brighter. Let's share the love with friends in our broader communities! Today we are drawing pictures to safely hang somewhere in public. When you next go grocery shopping could you hang your drawing on a bulletin board? Is there a telephone pole by your house where people hang fliers? Can you say hi to your neighbors from your window? Consider what you could draw to bring a smile to someone's face. What if we communicated all through pictures? Today, we are reaching out to our friends through a photo exchange. You can tell your friend all about your day– what you saw, appreciated, laughed at! Try to only send pictures without captions and see if you can piece together the arc of your friend's day! How were they feeling? What did they eat? What made them chuckle? Take screenshots of your conversation and send to us at #chinatimakingtogether !

Technology allows us to stay in constant contact, even with friends across the globe. However, there is something incredibly special about receiving a letter in the mail, even to this day. As such, today we're going analog creating and writing postcards to friends we miss. You'll begin by drawing your friend from memory and then sharing a few lines with them! If you can safely ship your postcard off, send us a picture of the mail drop in action!
