Movement

How do you capture movement in an artwork? How does your body move when making art? What connections can be drawn between the visual arts and dance? How can movement express emotion, or tell a story?

Movement will get participants up and moving their bodies! This project series explores the expressive qualities of drawing, gesture, and dance. The final project asks you to respond to an artwork through movement, opening up another way to enter and experience the work.

How does your body move when you draw? Today we're taking things up to 11 to make GIANT drawings. Working in largescale and placing your canvas on the ground might change how you run your pencil (or whatever drawing implement you use) across the page. In 1994, Chinati exhibited paintings by Korean artist Yun Hyong-keun, a detail of whose painting Untitled (1993) you can see in this post. To create his largescale, opaque washes, Yun would brush several layers of paint onto unprimed canvas placed on the studio floor. The Chinati Foundation hosts about five artists in residence a year. This past winter our artist in residence was dancer, choreographer and artist, Kim Brandt. The visual arts and dance have enjoyed a long partnership– in fact artists in the Chinati collection, including our founder Donald Judd, had ties to the dance world, developing sets for choreographers such as Trisha Brown. Like artworks at Chinati that are site-specific, dance can also be site-specific, with movement that is based upon surrounding architecture, landscape, and objects. For today's prompt, we encourage you to use your body to reenact how you interact with furniture around your home, without the furniture being present. How does it feel to move in this way? Sound on! To gain a deeper understanding of an artwork, either that you see or that you made yourself, it can be useful to engage with it in ways that go beyond looking. You could write a poem about it or develop sound that might accompany it. Today you will be choreographing your own dance based off of an artwork you've made with us! In 2017, Benjamin Millepied's L.A. Dance Project came to Marfa for a week long residency at Chinati. Millepied and dancers choregraphed a series of dances in response to Chinati's collection and architectural spaces.
