Chinati Weekend 2016: Donald Judd's Freestanding Floor Pieces and Horizontal Wall Works
The Chinati Foundation is pleased to present two new installations of large-scale works by Donald Judd to coincide with the museum’s 30th Anniversary. Opening to the public over Chinati Weekend, October 7-9, 2016 and on view until August 2017, the two groups of work (horizontal wall works, and free-standing floor pieces) are drawn from the museum’s permanent collection and will be shown in two separate venues. They are among Judd’s largest interior works. To accommodate and permanently display these works, Judd designed in the mid 1980s a series of ten concrete buildings, of different sizes, to be constructed on the grounds of the Chinati Foundation. Construction of the concrete buildings was never completed and the works have remained in storage.
In the Ice Plant in downtown Marfa, Chinati will exhibit, for the first time, two stainless steel, five-part floor works. Both untitled (U Channel,1980, and V Channel, 1982), each work is composed of five open frame-like structures in brushed metal, each element approximately 5 feet high and 15 feet wide, sitting equally spaced and directly on the floor. The difference between the two works is the contour of their structure: one has a V profile and the other a squared-off U.
In Chinati’s special exhibition gallery, a selection of Judd’s horizontal wall works will be on view. Commonly referred to as “progressions” because of the mathematics that inform the sequence of box-shaped elements and their intervals that support the full length of a 21-foot long horizontal tube, Judd first introduced this form in 1963 as a hand-made prototype of painted wood and metal. Each subsequent work is unique and was fabricated by Bernstein Brothers of New York. Chinati’s permanent collection includes thirteen such works (all untitled, 1979-1980), made from a variety of combinations of red and blue anodized aluminum joined with galvanized iron, polished brass, or copper. Nine works from this series will be on view.
