Ricky Swallow, Skewed Open Structure with Rope #6, 2015. Patinated bronze

Ricky Swallow

Artists Ricky Swallow, Matt Connors, and Lesley Vance held an open stdio in the Locker Plant as part of Chinati Weekend 2015.

Ricky Swallow was born in Australia and lives and works in Los Angeles, with painter Lesley Vance. Swallow is primarily a sculptor working in a variety of materials. He makes wall reliefs or constructions—often bronze casts of modestly scaled, handmade cardboard forms, some of which have the appearance of glazed porcelain or ceramic with the leftover uncanny subtleties of the model’s original material intact. A recent series on view at David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles had lengths of rope (actually cast bronze) looping around and through rectangular monochromatic forms. Other exhibitions include Made in LA, Hammer Museum (2014), and the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, NY (2014). Swallow studied drawing (BFA) at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne.

Lesley Vance was born in Milwaukee and lives and works in Los Angeles. Her paintings have been featured in exhibitions at the Huntington Library, San Marino, CA (2013); FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2012); and Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick (2012). Group exhibitions include Conversations in and Around Abstract Paintings, LACMA, Los Angeles (2015); Painter Painter, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2013) and the 2010 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, NY.
