Lap loom work from 2015 adult workshop

Adult Lap Loom Workshop-November 7-8, 10 and 11, 2015

Textile artist Suzanne Tick will lead a four-session weaving workshop for adults at the Chinati Foundation on Saturday and Sunday, November 7-8. The class takes place from 10am – 4pm each day at the museum’s on-site Art Lab. Evening classes are held the following week, from 5:30-7:30pm November 10 and November 11.

Students in Tick’s class will make weavings from a variety of non-traditional materials using lap looms. Participants are asked to collect and bring media that have personal significance to be incorporated into their weavings: rubber bands, a bird’s nest, horse hair, drinking straws or even the stuffing from your father’s Lazy Boy recliner are all possibilities.

On the first class day, Tick will touch on her personal art and share her experience as a textile designer. After acquainting students with the lap loom, the group will have a working lunch where Suzanne will present Who//Me//Us, a brief talk and video presentation on self identity as it relates to today’s economic and technological landscape. The remainder of the day will be spent shaping design ideas and starting work. Sunday is a weaving day, in which students will learn additional techniques and be encouraged to express themselves through this process.

The Tuesday and Wednesday evening sessions will allow further exploration, with Suzanne’s input and guidance.

Suzanne Tick has exhibited her work worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and Art Basel. Her work has also been collected by private and corporate patrons. In addition to her fine art, she is the founder of Suzanne Tick Inc., which specializes in materials brand strategy, product design, development and direction for commercial interiors.

No previous weaving experience is necessary to enjoy the Chinati weaving class. A $100 fee covers materials and lab time. Please note that enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required.
